Our Creative Approach

GDI is going to talk about child labor, child slavery and child-trafficking in such a way that has never before been attempted. We have decided to save spam, junk mail and brochures for telemarketers selling you widgets you don’t need.

The reality of child trafficking is ugly, sad and depressing. For some people the real life stories and experiences of victims galvanize them to action, but this is not the case for everyone. Often, many of us will ‘change the channel’ to find something more ‘fun’ to watch.

ImageTo get you to learn about child-trafficking, to build an advocate base and to get support to our trafficking programs, we are bringing good energy to the industry to make counter-child trafficking ‘fun!’

In order to achieve these goals and to increase the number of people supporting counter trafficking and our programs, we use creative methods to generate initial interest.

At GDI, we seek to call advocates to action from a place of inspiration rather than guilt.

With the support of university students, Queensland University of Technology, the 4wd Industry and other eclectic stakeholders, we are transforming ‘Big Deeds’, a rusty old 1981 Toyota Troopcarrier Landcruiser 4x4, into a symbol for child-trafficking reduction in Australia. The environment is also important to us here at GDI so Big Deeds is being outfitted to become Australia’s Most Environmentally Friendly, Classic Multi-Media Monster Truck.

Why a 4x4 truck?

Presently, global child-trafficking is on the rise. Grassroots organizations and advocates need additional support and more advocates and new ways of thinking about counter child trafficking.

GDI is taking the counter trafficking message to a whole new demographic.

We are calling for diverse support for the creation of Big Deeds and simultaneously teaching them about child-trafficking. Universities, corporations, television programs, 4x4 industry stakeholders and even professional Latin dancers have invested time to support Big Deeds and to learn about trafficking and how they can help. Big Deeds is actually building an eclectic, child-trafficking advocacy base using the 4x4 industry as platform.

The truck itself is also telling an important story.

We are filming the truck customization process and simultaneously telling powerful trafficking narratives. Our aim is to educate Big Deeds supporters about child-trafficking. We are are not limiting this educational process to our direct supporters however. A series of videos about Big Deeds and child-trafficking called, Create My Social Justice Ride, are airing on national Australian television. Our educational videos can be viewed on YouTube.com as well.

Big Deeds is also a physical educational tool.

ImageGDI volunteers will use Big Deeds as a novel education delivery tool to recruit, educate and train child-trafficking advocates in Australia. We are also planning on sending Big Deeds on an international counter trafficking assignment. Big Deeds and our advocates support our emerging counter-trafficking projects with grass-roots partners in developing countries.

Big Deeds as a concept is catching on. In fact, we have started to create 'Big Deeds II' at another Australian university.

Our first two projects, R.E.A.C.H. and Drive to Stop the Traffic also use environmentally friendly 4x4s to engage in counter child trafficking.

Big Deeds’ Objectives

Supporting Big Deeds means supporting:

  • A symbol for our organization and the counter child-trafficking movement –when people see Big Deeds driving down the street they will know what he is and what he stands for;

  • A novel mechanism to capture mass media attention as a means to raise trafficking awareness, which in turn calls people to direct action;

  • An education delivery tool that GDI staff and volunteers will use to recruit and educate people to support our counter trafficking programs in developing countries;

  • A device that purposefully engages a diverse and wide range of community members in philanthropic activities (businesses, 4wd’ers, universities, churches, high schools, etc.);

  • A project model to be used by GDI student groups around the world. Emerging GDI student groups will recruit and educate advocates to volunteer and financially support our counter trafficking programs in developing countries;

  • An edgy fundraising tool;

  • A campaign to educate and a call to action for a broad audience on the issue of child-trafficking using creative and educational methods never before attempted;

  • University students engaging in a ‘real world’ learning experience in the context of social change and social justice;

  • A new world record to be set! Big Deeds will be submitted to the Guinness Book of World Records as Australia’s Most Environmentally Friendly, Classic Multi-Media Monster Truck.

Facts and Questions

Why a truck?

It’s simple. With hundreds of thousands of charities in Australia, millions in the USA and tens of millions around the world, we are entering into the child-trafficking sector in a strategically creative way. We are not ‘reinventing the wheel’ or duplicating other trafficking initiatives; we are adding value, creativity and a unique voice to the entire industry.

Big Deeds is an inspirational way to create an advocate base. The advocates that support Big Deeds will also support our counter child-trafficking programs in developing countries.

Most importantly, we are getting YOU interested in ‘doing good deeds’!

Big Deeds broad scope?

We seek to increase the number of international advocates supporting our counter trafficking programs in developing countries. We want you to be an advocate! Big Deeds is a tool to generate enthusiasm for our programs. What is more, we receive a lot of volunteer support from university students. Big Deeds is a novel tool to capture the imagination of those students and to get them involved. Our goal is to have one Big Deeds truck, at every Australian university.

Big Deeds adds value and direct support to the counter trafficking movement using a creative medium.

What’s all this talk about creativity and Big Deeds?

Big Deeds is creative in that it is being outfitted with solar panels, an ethanol driven diesel engine and other environmentally friendly gadgets. Also, TV screens are being embedded into his exterior walls.

Creativity helps get the message across. When we drive Big Deeds to high schools, local businesses and national events we will engage in visual counter trafficking workshops via our TV screens in order to teach others about child-trafficking.

A novel and creative, therefore successful, strategy for recruiting advocates and raising awareness.

Who is involved at this point and what is the goal?

In co-operation with the Creative Industries Faculty at Queensland University of Technology and 4wd TV this initiative is being filmed to air on 4wd TV, Australia’s most watch public TV program with 500,000 viewers weekly. We will also put our videos on YouTube for viewing by a worldwide audience.

The aim of our videos is to educate and unite diverse peoples for a common goal, which is to support GDI’s counter trafficking programs in developing countries, programs that prevent trafficking and free children from slavery.

We achieve these goals by educating and inspiring you to give meaning to your life in a creative way. Once you watch our videos, you’ll be compelled to join in! Big Deeds is an innovative and authentic attempt to generate a ‘good deeds counter trafficking buzz’ in the local and international community where little is known about child-trafficking. We’ll also use Big Deeds to raise funds for these programs as well.

ImageHey Good Deeds International, I want to learn about trafficking without being ‘turned off’ to the terrible suffering of children? What do you have for me?

The reality of child trafficking is ugly, sad and depressing. For some people the real life stories and experiences of victims drive them to direct action, but this is not the case for everyone. Our approach is to use creative methods when talking about trafficking.

We seek to call advocates to action from a place of inspiration rather than guilt.

For example, during Big Deeds’ custom suspension installation at Carols Suspension in Brisbane, Imagewe had professional Latin dancers from Rio Rhythmics give a free dance lesson at the mechanic shop during the instillation. While having fun, we were teaching others about child-trafficking and expanding our network. Guess what, other donors are now requesting to support Bid Deeds and to learn about counter child-trafficking. This is crucial as an increase in advocates worldwide is necessary to offset the increasing criminal networks ravaging our children. We don’t simply educate advocates, we get them to support our counter child-trafficking in developing countries.

Everyone from university students, to auto mechanics to Latin dancers understand our vision!

Again, so why a truck?

We have many practical and inspirational reasons why we are using 4wds.

We are customizing additional trucks to be used as for a counter trafficking and healthcare program in remote, indigenous communities in Laos (only assessable by 4wds).

We are also using 4wd vehicles to engage in the largest and most creative counter child trafficking campaign ever attempted.
